WHAT IT IS
ABOUT THIS RECIPE
This recipe should get you up and running in Photoshop in no time. After all, it only took less than five minutes to create. In a nutshell, this recipe walks you through using the smart object and content-aware options to add a background and crops the image to focus on the teeth and ears.
Before we start, you need to know that the image has been enhanced using layer masks. Layer masks allow you to add transparency effects and create extremely detailed visual effects on your image. They are the best way to hide parts of an image and reveal other parts.

The first step is to create a layer mask and place it over the image. To create a layer mask, simply use the Lasso Tool to select the top layer and click Edit > Define Mask. You then select a black-and-white checkerboard pattern and click OK.
To create a selection from the middle layer, use the Magic Wand tool, shown in Figure 14-2, to select the area you want to keep. Then, make sure the layer is active and click OK to select it. To select the background, make sure the background layer is active, and then click OK to select the background. You can also select multiple areas with the Magic Wand tool if you wish.

STEP 1: Create Layer Masks for Selections
It’s very easy to get started with layer masks. To begin, make sure the top layer and background layer are active and click OK to select them. The top layer should now be highlighted in yellow (Figure 14-3).
STEP 2: Cut the Background Layer
From the Layers panel, click the Add Layer Mask button and create a new layer mask for the top layer. Select it with the Magic Wand tool and click Edit > Delete. You may need to expand the selection mask icon (the little box with the hollow arrow) to do this. Make sure you keep only the teeth area (Figure 14-4).

INTEREST IN POLITICS
The Committee to Elect a Republican
to the Senate in 1897 issued these
tariffs of the great political
issues which were discussed in
the Republican state convention
held at Raleigh on the last Sunday
in June. The various interests
of the convention were separated
by the five party leaders, and
they were handled by
patriotic committees. The question
of Judge Tarleton’s term of
office was the first one. The
proposition to elect him for two
years was approved by a large
majority, and in that case the
temporary re-apportionment was
to continue for two years, the
fractional legislature to be re-apportioned
along with the state
at large. It was also voted to
hold the state elections in’ 1897,
and the contests were to be open
and free. The proposition to
elect Judge Tarleton for one
year was defeated, and while
the adjournment was pending
on that proposition, the duty
of the Committee was to
fill the position left by the
departure of Judge Archer,
and that duty was discharged by
James E. Trotter, of Raleigh,
who was chosen by a unanimous
vote of the convention. Mr. Trotter
was a member of the State
Board of Education, and President
of the South Carolina Educational
Association in 1893.
Mr. Trotter was not a follower
of Judge Tarleton, and when
it was brought to his attention
that Tarleton had pledged himself
to do his best to bring the
attorney-general’s office into the
Davie family, he was in favor
of not electing Tarleton, and in
favor of electing a Republican
for the position. If this decision
was reached without animus,
there is no imputing ill motives
to him, for a man in such a
situation will naturally hesitate
to act hastily, and his hesitation
was justified by the fact that,
in the first discussion
What’s New In?
The present invention is directed to a search engine that allows a user to select from a list of items. The items are sorted based on several criteria.
Known search engines include the well-known Yahoo!® ( and Google® ( search engines. For example, Yahoo!® allows a user to enter a search criteria, such as a keyword, which is used to locate web pages containing the keyword. When the search criteria is a keyword, the search engine returns a list of web pages which contain the entered keyword. In this list, the web pages are ranked according to the number of times the keyword appears within the page. The ranking of each web page is based on the total number of “hits” for the keyword. A hit is a text string which contains the keyword.
Typically, a web page is assigned a score based on the hits of a keyword within the web page. The score is calculated by adding the hit count for the keyword and dividing by the total number of hits in the web page. The web pages on a search result list are sorted in descending order based on the scores. The order of the list is typically the order of importance to a user. The user can scroll through the list to find the web page of interest.
In addition to the list of web pages sorted in descending order based on score, a Google® search returns a list of web pages that are searched for the search criteria. This list is sorted in descending order based on the number of times the search criteria has been entered for the web pages. As with the Yahoo!® search, the Google® search is a search by key-word and web pages are ranked according to the hits of the keywords. The Google® search, however, also returns a list of “related” web pages which are determined by finding all other web pages that point to the web page that is returned. The related web pages are listed in a list that is sorted in descending order based on a weighting of the related web pages. The weight is determined by the number of inlinks to the returned web page.
The search engines are often complicated to use. A user typically has to enter multiple search criteria to obtain useful search results. The user must enter the multiple search criteria using the search criteria boxes provided for the search engine. The user may not always enter all of the correct search criteria. The search engine will not be able to find web pages that
