The gamma-aminobutyric acidB receptor blocker (+/-)2-hydroxy-N-(1,4-dihydro-4-phenyl-1-4-piperidinyl)acetamide is a new psychotropic agent. This compound (300-600 mg/kg) and a vehicle control were investigated for receptor binding and anticonvulsant properties in mice. The compound is a potent inhibitor of 3H-GABA binding to rat brain membranes (IC50 = 3.4 +/- 0.4 microM) and this inhibition was displaced by GABA. The compound antagonized the cataleptogenic effects of GABAB receptor agonists in mice, indicating that it is a competitive antagonist at the receptor. The compound was also a potent anticonvulsant in the maximal electroshock (MES) test when given at doses of 30 and 100 mg/kg. In the subcutaneous pentylenetetrazol (s.c. PTZ) test, the compound reduced the ED50 value for pentylenetetrazol and increased the latency to seizure. These results suggest that (+/-)2-hydroxy-N-(1,4-dihydro-4-phenyl-1-4-piperidinyl)acetamide is a potent GABAB receptor antagonist that is anticonvulsant in vivo.Share on Facebook

Since the start of the new year, we’ve been given new details about Ridley Scott’s $140 million space thriller The Martian, as well as news on a September 3 release.
The Martian stars Matt Damon as astronaut Mark Watney, who is marooned after a manned mission to Mars goes awry. The Guardian wrote up some of the major plot points back in January, and now Deadline (via Variety) has revealed that the recently-filmed movie is very loosely based on the real-life events that occurred to NASA astronaut Mark Watney.

Bush’s White House, has given us perhaps the most interesting take on the Robert Mueller-led probe that has yet to emerge.
“Mueller should be allowed to finish the investigation he has been asked to conduct,” Abrams told Vanity Fair, as reported by Laura Rosenberger in Politico.

Abrams’s comments are notable for a number of reasons. For one, he’s the most senior Trump administration official to say something even remotely in favor of the president. For another, they come from a veteran foreign policy hand, someone who has been in the loop for years. (Abrams was on the National Security Council for President George H.W. Bush and was on the National Security Council for President George W. Bush as well.) For another, they represent perhaps the most scathing, even skeptical, stance he’s taken on the Mueller investigation to date.
The big takeaway from his quote, in my view, is the fact that Abrams is prepared to argue that Mueller should be allowed to “finish the investigation” into the question of whether the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to try and influence the 2016 election, even if the probe digs up more and more disturbing info.
In other words, Abrams might not have much faith in Robert Mueller’s investigation, but at the very least, he doesn’t seem to think Mueller will go too far.
Granted, Abrams might not have much faith in Robert Mueller’s investigation
As well-known skeptics inside and outside of the Beltway realize, Mueller’s investigation into what Russia did to try and influence the 2016 election, and whether the Trump campaign conspired with them, has been hamstrung from the get-go by Justice Department rules.
Specifically, those rules require Mueller to stick to a very narrow purpose for his investigation: to determine if the Trump campaign illegally coordinated with Russia to try and influence the 2016 election.
