Targeted Stabilization of Niobium-Based Metal-Organic Framework for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx by Ammonia.

The selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 is one of the most widely studied catalytic methods due to its effectiveness and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, the operation temperature and NH3 uptake capacity are still not high enough for certain applications. Herein, a Zr(IV)-based metal-organic framework MOF-HBC was synthesized by a simple method. The MOF-HBC is composed of Niobium-based metal nodes and tetrahedral organic linkers, which has a super high catalytic activity and good NH3 uptake capacity at low temperature (160 °C). The catalytic activity is confirmed by the conversion of CO (90%) and the production of CH4 (5%) and CO2 (5%). Furthermore, the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 can reach complete reduction at 180 °C. The NOx conversion rate is also close to 100% when the reaction temperature is increased up to 250 °C. In addition, the activation energy of NOx conversion with NH3 can be calculated to be 64 kJ mol(-1) from the Arrhenius plot, indicating a thermodynamically favored reaction. The existence of Nb(5+) in MOF-HBC can be proved by XPS and XRD experiments. The NH3 adsorption capacity of MOF-HBC is as high as 7.2 mmol g(-1), which is among the highest among the reported catalysts.
